Easter Saturday (the day after Good Friday) is not a public holiday uniformly across Australia. Its status is determined separately by each state and territory's public holidays legislation, which the National Employment Standards then apply by reference. Consequently an employee's entitlement turns on the jurisdiction in which they perform their work (or, in limited cases, the location to which their industrial instrument is connected). In 2026 the day will be a public holiday for most employees in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, but will not be a public holiday in South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory or the Northern Territory. Payroll officers must therefore check the relevant state or territory Act (and any applicable modern award or enterprise agreement) for each employee rather than applying a single national rule.
